On September 11, 2001, our nation suffered a collective

tragedy that for a moment seemed to make time stand still.

People's hearts were in their throats as they watched the twin

 towers collapse around rescuers

 and victims attempting to escape

 the carnage. We watched others

jump 100 stories to escape the

inferno.

Yet on an almost daily basis

and on a very quiet and personal

level we help families who have just had the bottom fall out of

their world -- their hopes and dreams for the future dashed.

A family who has lost a two-year-old child or an extended

family (several generations) who loses a 90-year-old grand-

mother feels at that moment that "time stands still." Those of

us in this industry who have stood at the back of a hearse as

a four-year-old, in tears, looks at you and says, "Please be

careful with my granny," have seen the hopelessness it

 brings.

The events of September 11 united us as a nation and

allowed us (many religions, nationalities and political parties)

to reach out and make a difference. People of great diversity

(blue collar and white collar) drove hundreds of miles to pitch

in and help. A nation, maybe lulled to sleep by overwhelming

success ... woke up to respond.

Lest we forget or become lulled  to

sleep by success in good times. Every

day is our opportunity to respond, to

help out and to make a difference.

                                        A difference for someone whose

world has just been shattered --

whose dreams have just been dashed.

Lest we forget, every time the phone rings at the funeral

home, another opportunity presents itself. An opportunity to

make all the difference in the world to someone.
